Life Sciences Day at University

Last week a group of Year 10 students visited the University of Liverpool to spend a day in their Life Sciences Department.

During the day the students enjoyed a wide range of degree-standard activities, including isolating DNA from strawberries, utilising microscopes to identify bacteria, folding DNA and taking blood pressure measurements.

The students then attended an interactive lecture led by the Head of Life Sciences School, Professor Blair Grubb called “How hot is hot?”

The students took lots away from the day, with Timothy commenting “the labs had excellent facilities” and “I enjoyed learning how to take my blood pressure” from Emily. Claire commented that her favourite part of the day was extracting DNA from strawberries.

The students were a credit to the school throughout the day, engaging in sessions with eagerness and maturity.
