The Big Read helps parents to engage students with reading at home

NLA created The Big Read to provide parents with support on reading with their children at home.

Sarah Loader (a primary publishing consultant) joined us and ran a tutorial for parents/guardians. We also had stall from the adult learning centre, who provided families with information on courses they could attend to support them academically as well as their children.

Part of the event was the Scholastic Book Fair – which was a great success, plus the comic book stall where we gave away free comics to emphasise the value that these also have for reading, as well as longer books.

‘Read Liverpool’ also joined us to show parents/guardians how to register for library resources in the city.

We had fantastic feedback from parents, who said that they got some really useful tips on how to support and promote reading at home. They took information from the adult learning centre and some registered for courses themselves.

We plan to put on similar events in the future to raise the profile of reading and the importance of this becoming a habit for our students at home.
