On 20th December 2017, Year 11 Life Sciences UTC students hosted their annual Christmas market event. Transforming the sports hall into a veritable winter wonderland, students worked like elves to produce a wide range of goods for sale including tree decorations, art, sweet treats and festive snacks, all in aid of raising money for Merseyside Charity KIND.
Lower and upper year groups pitched in to support their peers and local Primary School St Laurence’s Primary was then invited along to visit the markets, complete with karaoke tunes and even a homemade Santa’s Grotto, making for a brilliantly festive afternoon.
Following the event, founder and Chief Executive of the charity Stephen Yip called into the Life Sciences UTC during PULSE to deliver a personal thank you to the Year 11’s and staff who put so much work into the event.
Since 1975, KIND has been helping make a difference in the lives of thousands of disadvantaged children and families from across Liverpool and greater Merseyside.
Stephen explained that through our region is improving in so many ways, Liverpool still has some of the poorest, most deprived areas in the UK and too many of our children still find themselves living in poverty and facing a disadvantage on a daily basis.During the day of the event, Stephen joined other staff and volunteers in packing hampers as part of their Christmas and New Year Hamper Appeal for disadvantaged children and families from within the community. Thanks to the support of thoughtful initiatives such as the UTC’s Christmas event, KIND were able to meet their target, distributing 1600 hampers at Christmas and a further 200 in the New Year. Over 8000 children and their families were helped during this time.
By hosting this fun-filled day, Life Sciences UTC and Studio students raised a whopping £706, every penny of which went towards helping to make a difference in the lives of thousands of local children this Winter. Stephen commented “the support from the Year 11’s has helped us to show our families that others in the community do care about them and their problems. Thank you for helping us to make a real difference at Christmas and New Year!”
