North Liverpool Academy has launched its new ‘In Bloom Community Gardening Club’ alongside staff from Breckfield and North Everton Community Council. Central to this project is the development of our allotment space for which BNENC have already been crucial in clearing out the overgrown weeds, mown the long grass, taken out all the nettles and rubbish and prepared the ground.
We started the session by filling-up the raised beds with compost and soil in layers, taking lots of manual work using wheel-barrows and spades. Once we got the first raised bed filled, we made straight lines in the soil and planted our very first potato seeds, spring onions and plant lettuce.
Ms Connell said, “Gardening is great fun! To be able to see plants and trees that you have looked after produce lovely fruit and veg and then eat it is fantastic. Also a big thank you must go to Aigburth Hall Nurseries who have supplied our Fruit trees.”
The club is open to new members so please do come along! It is running on Tuesdays 3:30pm-5:30pm for students, staff and family members and Thursday 12:30pm-2:30pm for all members of the Community (meeting at BNENC at 12:25pm).
This term we are going to learn how to plant vegetables like potatoes, onions, tomatoes and other vegetables as well as how to make a herb garden and plant different types of fruit trees.
We look forward to seeing you!
