It’s been a busy one here recently at NLA, with our students taking part in lots of inspiring and educational activities, completely unique to our school.
Earlier this month, 50 of our Year 13 students were invited to take part in UK University Search’s University and Apprenticeship Fair, which was hosted in affiliation with the University of Liverpool. The day was a great success, and our students had the opportunity to engage with and speak to the University of East Anglia, Edge Hill University and Liverpool John Moores University; there was also the opportunity to discuss apprenticeships with media giant, Virgin. Throughout the day, our students heard inspiring talks about accessing student finance, and applying for Oxbridge.
We also hosted a careers event for for Years 7 to 13, where our students were able to meet with over 30 employers, colleges, universities and training providers who had all generously donated their time to make sure that they were on hand to talk to our students about future opportunities and next steps, once they graduate from NLA.
On 10 October our weekly wellbeing briefing was dedicated to World Mental Health Day and was a special event which had an emphasis on staying connected and supporting each other. We have also announced additional mental health and wellbeing posts for our teaching and support staff, and we are going to make sure that more of our team are qualified to deliver Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
E-safety is important at NLA and we got our Year 7 students involved in a fun and collaborative activity day to promote safety and awareness whilst online. As our world becomes ever more tech-reliant, it’s important that we take some time to switch off and realise why we need time away from our screens. Our students took a well-earned digital detox, and enjoyed problem-solving skills, tarsia puzzle races, communications, and teamworking skills.
As well as focusing on technology at NLA, we also have a strong focus on science, and our Year 10 students have recently conducted a science experiment to see whether sudocrem, TCP, mouthwash, or multi-surface cleaner has the best antibacterial properties. NLA supports charities close to our heart, and this week we have raised £261.77 for Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in memory of Poppy ‘Rocket’ Keeling. Well done to Ms Cavanagh for scooping our top prize in our charity raffle!
Our very own Graeme Erickson was nominated for Science Teach of the Year Award at the Schools, Students and Teachers network (SSAT) awards this week. We’re so proud to have such talent teaching in our science department.
And speaking of awards, we’re also incredibly proud of our Year 8 boy’s football team which has won both of its cup games in the National Cup. Now we wait to see who they’re drawn against for the next game… Good luck for the rest of the season!
