Step into the NHS
On the 8th February 2018, Northern Schools Trust welcomed student and staff as part of the national ‘Step into the NHS’ competition, inviting students to create a fun and lively job advertisement in their chosen field. Some created posters, leaflets, and even 3D models.
Judges were overwhelmed by the response to the competition and received over 85 entries across North Liverpool Academy, Kingsway Academy and Wigan UTC.
A massive range of roles were explored by the students, highlighting a diverse range of specialist subjects and well-researched interests including:
- Biomedical scientist
- Chef
- Child’s play specialist
- Midwife
- Occupational therapist
- Paramedic
- Surgeon
- Child nurse
- Clinical psychologist
- Dental therapist
- Doctor, nurse and paediatrician
- Drama therapist
- Human resources officer
- Physiotherapist
- Cardiac physiologist
Cardiologist- Chief operating officer
- Dentist
- Forensic psychologist
- Genetic Counsellor
- Helicopter pilot
- Mechanic
- Mental health nurse and Therapists
- Pharmacist
- Phlebotomist
- Psychiatrist
- Specialist paramedic
- Consultant rheumatologist
- Social Worker
In the afternoon, the top 10 students came together to pitch their entries to a panel consisting of Health Sector Skills Champion Hannah Randles, various senior staff from across the trust including Trust CEO Mr Ward, Life Sciences UTC Principal Mr Parry, and finally Claire Tinsley from Health Education England.
The top 10 entries consisted of:
5 entries from Kingsway Academy
1 entry from Wigan UTC
1 entry from North Liverpool Academy
3 entries from Life Sciences UTC
Judge Hannah Randles commented: “The students showed brilliant presentation skills, confidence and professionalism when pitching their entries and where a real credit to the Trust.”
Claire Tinsley from HEE commented how impressed she was with the amount of entries and the quality of the entries that were presented to her. She was very impressed with the level of engagement from the students with the idea of careers within the NHS.
It was a very close competition but the final winner announced was from Kingsway Academy for her Biomedical Scientist entry.
Our winner was awarded a £20 gift voucher. A huge congratulations to our successful candidate, and a massive well done to all the students who entered for their impressive efforts.
Health Sector Skills Champion Hannah Randles commented: “I’d seen the national competition advertised and was really keen to try and take the concept and idea and transfer that into a cross trust competition that would bring students together.
I never thought we would get 85 entries with such a massive array of careers within the NHS. It’s really exciting to see students engaging in such a creative and professional way with potential future career ideas. It was brilliant to get Health Education England involved and exposed to our fantastic students. I’m already planning for next year’s competition!”
